Penelope and Ouran Review

Posted by: Karla in

Okay so, I didn't want this blog to be just about books so today I'm going to review to different thing. The first being a movie and the second being an anime. These reviews will be short and sweet :) like all my reviews will be. I am not much of a critical person. I either like it or I don’t.

Movie Review: Penelope

Penelope

Plot Summary: “In this modern day romantic tale, Penelope is about a young girl's inspiring journey, a mysterious family secret and the power of love. With all odds against her, in order for Penelope to break the family curse, she must find true love with "one of her own kind"”

Okay so this movie isn't new or anything but I ended up watching it today. I had wanted to see it since it came out in 2006 but I had never gotten the chance.

This movie was great. It was funny and emotional and fantastic. To me it had to do with the fact that id you accept yourself everything else just comes to you or something like that I’m not very good with expressing myself in these kinds of situation.

I laughed, I cried ( but I cry a lot in movies…and books…and manga…and anime…yeah I cry a lot :) ), and I would absolutely recommend this movie.

Show Review: Ouran High School Host Club

Plot Summary: “Haruhi is a poor tomboyish student at a school for the ultra-wealthy, able to attend because of a scholarship, and unable to even afford a uniform. One day, she stumbles across the decidedly peculiar but very popular Ouran Host Club. She tries to leave, but accidentally breaks a vase, and unable to pay for it, she's told that she'll have to stay and do odd jobs. That is, until they decide she would be more valuable as a club member. Not realizing she's female due to her appearance, they fix her up and give her a male uniform. She's an instant hit, so they decide to have her keep up the charade even after they find out the truth. Haruhi, being average almost to a fault, doesn't know what to make of the unconventional activities of the Host Club (or of the even more unconventional members), but having little choice, she plays along. Before long, real bonds are formed, friends made, and Haruhi finds herself accepted in a way she could never have been otherwise in this affluent school.”

Review: If you like anime and you loved Fruits Basket you will absolutely love this show. This show is humorous and it still has deep message. Each character has their own problems and when they come together in the host club they all gain experience and learn and find how to be a better people. Its kind of like they are each others saviors kind of but not as dramatic. I loved this series for its funny/tender moments. You fall in love with all the characters.

Contests and Oher Stuff

Posted by: Karla in

I enter a lot of contest mostly because I would love to get books but I don't have money to buy books so I try my luck with contest. As many of you know its hard to win contests. I've entered many, but so far I have won one. Contests are fun to enter so I thought I'd make it easier for some people by having contest links to all the contest I've entered on the side bar. I know I'm not the only one who does this but it will still be helpful to some people since one person isn't going to have all the contest. Just thought I'd give a heads up though I only have 8 followers someone else might read this. Right now I only have one contest there and you should enter for a chance to win some April releases.
On another note I finally finishes Eyes Like Stars and I will review that soon and right now I am currently reading My Soul To Save and I have some thoughts about that book but you won't know until I post a review after reading it. I will also post somethings that popped up last week that me being a weirdo wont post until today. :)

The Secret Year by Jennifer Hubbard Review

Posted by: Karla

The Secret Year by Jennifer Hubbard

Okay this is my second review and I'm still not sure how to start out and express for my fellings, but here I go.
When I first heard about this book I was really excited. After waiting and waiting for my library to get it I finally read it. Over time my expectation were raised and maybe it was unfair, but I can't change it. This book did not fulfill my expectations but I did enjoy it.
I liked the main character Colt. I could tell that he always longed for a time that he could be out in public with Julia and have a more real relationship that meeting most weeks out by the lake every Friday. One thing that did bother me about Colt was when he knew he didn't have the same feelings for Syd as she had for him, he still allowed it to reach the point it did.
One thing that I wish this book had more of was flashbacks to times of Julia and him that didn't include them having sex in her car. To me sometimes it felt that that was the main point of the relationship, and that ,like Colt realized was a possibility at the end of the story, eventually they would have outgrown it and gotten bored.
Overall I liked the idea behind the story but the execution wasn't great for me. If your looking for a quick okay read I recommend this book. I give it three stars.
Oo Oo Oo. One of my favorite parts is the whole brother scene at Thanksgiving :)

***Three Strars

Bonus: I know this is kind of wierd but while looking for a picture to use for my contest entry I found the cover picture to the book. Some of you will think Im wierd but I was kinda happy :).

Push by Sapphire Review

Posted by: Karla in

PushPush by Sapphire

Borrowed from Library

Summary:An electrifying first novel that shocks by its language, its circumstances, and its brutal honesty, Push recounts a young black street-girl's horrendous and redemptive journey through a Harlem inferno. For Precious Jones, 16 and pregnant with her father's child, miraculous hope appears and the world begins to open up for her when a courageous, determined teacher bullies, cajoles, and inspires her to learn to read, to define her own feelings and set them down in a diary.

My Thoughts: Okay so the only reason I wanted to read this book was because the movie looked amazing and I don't like to watch book-based movies without reading the books.(reason I read Twilight)To start of this book was so hard to read. There were points in this book where I just wanted to put this book down and scrub away what I just read from my memory, but I didn't. I kept reminding my self that people go through this and that its best to learn all the horrible things in this world and not deny all the horrible things that have happened, will happen and are haping at this very moment.

Precious' journey is such a harsh and horrific thing. From the movie I knew that the father had gotten her pregnant, but I learned it was the SECOND time this had happened. I knew that the mom was horrible but she molested her to and I just...I just... I couldn't understand how they could put a child through such hell. Later on in the story the mom tells what happened the first time the abuse started. While she was telling the story, Precious kept wanting her to stop , I wanted her to stop and shut up. How can someone be so disgusting and have no heart, no soul to see what was happening to the child and not care if her man got angry. Kick him to the damn curb. What these people did was just... disgusting, horrific, and all other words that I can't think of.

I think it was a fantastic that Sapphire wrote the story as a journal. I think it helped make the whole story and life so much more real. The dialect, the spelling errors, the language, and everything else helped make Precious' story much more real. I appreciated that the only subject talked about, for lack of a better word, was not just sexual and physical abuse, but other tough real like situations such as appearance, what that meant to some people, sexual preferences, and all the characters' stories, which were included in the book also.

Something that I didn't like at all, but I knew were a main element of having Precious tell the story, is the amount of foul language. There was sooo much bad words in this book and the use of p***y was too much for me.

Overall this book was a good read. I wouldn't recommend it to kids under 15 or 16. I'm kind of used to reading about these subject, I read a lot of Ellen Hopkins but the stories never seem to stop horrify me and make me want to, as I mentioned before, put the book down and erase it from my memory but i know its real and someone has actually gone through it or something close to it. It contains very harsh and horrific subjects and a lot of unsuitable language. So if you want a gripping and eye opening read and don't really mind a lot and I mean A LOT of foul language then I would recommend it to you. For the fact that I really didn't completely love the book and I am not happy with so much foul language I give it a four.five.

****.5 Four.five Stars

Comment c’est vas? Bien? Bonne!

:0) Oh yeah I speak French…barely :)

So, went to our school library everyday the last week after school waiting for the day that I would search “Claudia Gray” and Hourglass would be there. Well, today it was. So I went to look for it but I couldn't find it so I asked the librarian who told me that they were all checked out. That confused me because the catalog said 1 was available. So i went to the other librarian to put it on hold and when I said Hourglass she said “oh. I have one available right here”. To the outside world I seemed cool and collected but on the inside I was ecstatic. :) So I am going to get my read on this week-end :) yeah-yeah :) I am very smiley today :)

6421588Hourglass by Claudia Gray

Bestselling author Claudia Gray’s Evernight series continues. In Hourglass, Bianca and Lucas have found a way to be together. But it means lying to the people who care about them the most.
After escaping from Evernight Academy, the vampire boarding school, Bianca and Lucas seek refuge with Black Cross, the elite group of vampire hunters led by Lucas’s stepfather. When Bianca’s close friend—the vampire Balthazar—is captured by Black Cross, Bianca knows she has to do whatever it takes to save him. But at what cost?
Hourglass, the third book in this gripping vampire series by the author of the New York Times bestseller Stargazer, has all the romance, suspense, and page-turning drama that have made Claudia Gray’s books runaway successes.

you’re going to make me cry. So a couple of days or weeks ago I found out that they pushed back the release date of Strange Fate to April if 2011! So it was supposed to be released next month but that got pushed back to July of this year. Now that is not going to happen and that makes me soooo sad. :( uhhhhhhhhhh.uhhhhhhhhh.uhhhhhhh. That is what I kept saying as I went around book sites to find out the release date. I know Good Reads is wrong it still says April. Amazon has 2011( D:!!). And BarnesAndNoble says July this year. I am prayin’ B&N is right.

After that struggle I went to the Simon and Schuster website and Strange Fate isn't even there like it was before. So I am freaking out. uhhhhhhhh. Someone please tell me what is going on. please?

Fairy Tale by Cyn Balog

Morgan Sparks and Cam Browne are a match made in heaven. They've been best friends since birth, they tell each other everything, and oh yeah- they're totally hot for each other.
But a week before their joint Sweet Sixteen bash, everything changes. Cam's awkward cousin Pip comes to stay, and Morgan is stunned when her formerly perfect boyfriend seems to be drifting away.
When Morgan demands answers, she's shocked to discover the source of Cam's distance isn't another girl- it's another world. Pip claims that Cam is a fairy. No, seriously. A fairy. And now his people want Cam to return to their world and take his rightful place as Fairy King.
Determined to keep Cam with her, Morgan plots to fool the fairies. But as Cam continues to change, she has to decide once and for all if he really is her destiny, and if their “perfect” love can weather an uncertain future.

Then I went to the young adult section of the library, which I usually don't do because its small and there isn't the best selection. I mean there are a lot of books but not the best or the most there could be. If only we had Kennewick's Library. *sigh*

So these are the ones i picked up while looking around.

Bad Girls don’t die by Katie Alender

Alexis thought she led a typically dysfunctional high school existence. Dysfunctional like her parents' marriage; her doll-crazy twelve-year-old sister, Kasey; and even her own anti-social, anti-cheerleader attitude.

When a family fight results in some tearful sisterly bonding, Alexis realizes that her life is creeping from dysfunction into danger. Kasey is acting stranger than ever: her blue eyes go green sometimes; she uses old-fashioned language; and she even loses track of chunks of time, claiming to know nothing about her strange behavior. Their old house is changing, too. Doors open and close by themselves; water boils on the unlit stove; and an unplugged air conditioner turns the house cold enough to see their breath in.

Alexis wants to think that it's all in her head, but soon, what she liked to think of as silly parlor tricks are becoming life-threatening--to her, her family, and to her budding relationship with the class president. Alexis knows she's the only person who can stop Kasey -- but what if that green-eyed girl isn't even Kasey anymore?

Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink

Sixteen-year-old Lia Milthorpe and her twin sister Alice have just become orphans, and, as Lia discovers, they have also become enemies. The twins are part of an ancient prophecy that has turned generations of sisters against each other. To escape from a dark fate and to remain in the arms of her beloved boyfriend James, Lia must end the prophecy before her sister does. Only then will she understand the mysterious circumstances of her parents' deaths, the true meaning of the strange mark branded on her wrist, and the lengths to which her sister will go to defeat her. Debut novelist Michelle Zink takes readers on an unforgettable journey where one sister's fateful decision could have an impact of Biblical proportions. Prophecy of the Sisters is the first of three books.

So I need to get to reading :)

Question?

Posted by: Karla

Would you rather read an entire series or just one novel?
Me personally would read the series, for sure. In a series the author has more room to allow the characters to grow and add more to the story. Also the reader is able to make a greater connection/bond with the characters if they are able to go through a whole series with them. Its like, would you rather know someone for a year and be like " oh yeah. you're a cool dude" or be like " I love you. If you were to leave I would be so sad. Remember the time we fought of that vampire that one time. Good times, good times". Maybe that wasn't the best example, but you get me right? :)

There are some single books up there, but those books are either the first in a series or are going to have a companion/follow up novel. I have read the Twilight series but it isnt one of my favorites. The books are goood though. Unfortunetly the Twilight frenzy killed it for me :/
