The Reckoning by Kelley Armstrong Review

Posted by: Karla in

Author: Kelley Armstrong Hardback: 391pgs.
Publisher: April 1st 2010 by HarperCollins

Summary:

My name is Chloe Saunders. I'm fifteen, and I would love to be normal.

But normal is one thing I'm not.

For one thing, I'm having these feelings for a certain antisocial werewolf and his sweet-tempered brother—who just happens to be a sorcerer—but, between you and me, I'm leaning toward the werewolf.

Not normal.

My friends and I are also on the run from an evil corporation that wants to get rid of us—permanently.

Definitely not normal.

And finally, I'm a genetically altered necro-mancer who can raise the dead, rotting corpses and all, without even trying.

As far away from normal as it gets.

My Thoughts: This book picks up right where The Awakening takes off. This book is so gripping. I started it and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. This book is full of action just like the others. The love triangle finally gets resolved in this final installment and when this certain event dealing with this said love triangle happened I just couldn't help but squeel and be uber happy, at the same time though another part that involved said love triangle happened, I cried. To put it easily, I am very happy with how the person she ends up with is, I don't think that will ruin it for anyone, seeing I didn't tell anyone I was team...yeah I am not going to tell you.
In conclusion I can not write to much about this book without spoiling part of it. This was fantastically written, set at a great place, and overall awesome. I read it in one day and kept thinking about it the next day. This book has a lot of mystery/action with just enough romance to keep me and maybe some of you others out there happy. I give the FINAL installment to The Darkest Powers Series five Stars.

Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols Review

Posted by: Karla in

Author: Jennifer Echols Paperback: 256pgs.
Publisher: March 17th 2009 by Pocket Books/MTV Books

Summary:All Meg has ever wanted is to get away. Away from high school. Away from her backwater town. Away from her parents who seem determined to keep her imprisoned in their dead-end lives. But one crazy evening involving a dare and forbidden railroad tracks, she goes way too far... and almost doesn't make it back.
John made a choice to stay. To enforce the rules. To serve and protect. He has nothing but contempt for what he sees as childish rebellion, and he wants to teach Meg a lesson she won't soon forget. But Meg pushes him to the limit by questioning everything he learned at the police academy. And when he pushes back, demanding to know why she won't be tied down, they will drive each other to the edge - and over...

My Thoughts:This book was amazing. It was amazing seeing the relationship grow and become real. These characters each had such grief that they never really got to show or pass or confront that they would never be able to live their lives right. John was never able to let go of what kept him in protecting the bridge. Meg was trying to live her life to the fullest, even though in the process she mught hurt herself or others. These characters push each other to their limits and on,, but allow themselves to finally find away to surpass those things that kept them from being who they could really be.
I heard a lot of great things about this book, and once I got to page 20 or so I just couldn't stop reading. I finished it that night. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. I cannot wait to read Forget You. I wanted to anyway, but now I want to more. I give this a high Five.

Radiant Shadows by Melissa Marr Review

Radiant Shadow (Wicked Lovely #4)
Author: Melissa Marr Hardback: 340pgs.

Summary:Hunger for nourishment.Hunger for touch.Hunger to belong.Half-human and half-faery, Ani is driven by her hungers. Those same appetites also attract powerful enemies and uncertain allies, including Devlin. He was created as an assassin and is brother to the faeries' coolly logical High Queen and to her chaotic twin, the embodiment of War. Devlin wants to keep Ani safe from his sisters, knowing that if he fails, he will be the instrument of Ani's death.Ani isn't one to be guarded while others fight battles for her, though. She has the courage to protect herself and the ability to alter Devlin's plans—and his life. The two are drawn together, each with reason to fear the other and to fear for one another. But as they grow closer, a larger threat imperils the whole of Faerie. Will saving the faery realm mean losing each other?Alluring romance, heart-stopping danger, and sinister intrigue combine in the penultimate volume of Melissa Marr's New York Timesbestselling Wicked Lovely series.

My Thoughts:Like all the other Melissa Marr books, Radiant Shadows did not disappoint. Radiant Shadows revolves around Ani and Devlin. I was a little worried I would not get into this book because I thought it wouldn't have many of the other characters, but it did. I loved the characters. Ani was such a strong person, always longing to be part of the Hunt but never being able to because her father Gabrielle never sees her as one of the Hounds but just as a fragile little pup. Devlin is the High Court Queen's bloodied hands. Being High Court means he can't indulge can't have the emotions others can have because that would be out of order. The only times he is able to induldge and feel free is when Rae posses his body. When Ani is put in danger, she escapes with Devlin.
Throughout the journey Devlin starts to see his true self. The self that has to choose between his loyalty his queen, Sorcha, or be with the first person he has every had these feelings for. At first I didn't know how I was going to respond to Ani, but it didn't take long for me to like her. She is such a strong character and I'm sure many people can relate to her. Always looking and waiting for the acceptance and approval to be what be. One things that I love about this book is the whole aspect of family between the courts. To the Dark Court, though many cower from it, family is very important to it. Ani, Irial, Rabbit, Tish, Rabbit, Gabriel, Niall, and Seth, too, they are all so close, they're family and when something devastating happens the emotion is there. It's there in all of them, and it was overwhelming to me how much each of them felt when that wasn't very common among them.Hounds.Fey.Halflings. I don't think I can explain it well, and I am probably confusing you guys, lets just say it was good.
This book has a great story plot, along with great characters, and a fantastic writing style. One of the things that I loved about this book is the writing. I most of this book out loud because I loved how it sounded and how even if I was just reading it from the book, the emotion was there. It wasn't hard to know how each of these characters felt. The wanting, the longing, the worry, the love, the everything. I recommend reading some of this book out loud even though it might be weird for you. I cannot wait to read the next and, I believe, finale book in the series. I love Melissa Marr's writing and can't wait to see what's to come in the future from her. She has an incredible writing ability and makes it easy to love/hate her characters. This book isn't my favorite in the series but it was still really really good. I thought I would miss Keenan and Ash but this story had great characters and enough emotion and wanting and other things great things going on that I didn't need that little bit of Keenan and Ash and Seth, even though I did appreciate Seth being a part of this story :) ( I LOVE Seth :) ). I give Radiant Shadows 5 Stars. I had given it a 4.5 but then I thought aboout it and dude I really like this book. I kept thinking about something in particular and now I HAVE to read the last one to find out the truth. Goodness. Just as fantastic as the others :)

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs Movie Review

Trailer:

Review:
I am fifteen, soon to be sixteen, but I still get super excited when I find out about a new animated movie. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs met and went above and beyond my expectations. I couldn't help but laugh. I watch it with my two younger sisters and eighteen year old brother and we were all cracking up. Not only does it have a great message to the story, more than one actually, it is a really heart warming story. The focus on the father-son bonding was really great and pulled on your heart strings. I really enjoyed this movie and I would really recommend it to people of all ages. I give it five out five stars. If I had the money I would probably buy this movie, which I no longer do because I end up watching it once and then not knowing where it is, but I would buy this movie.

The Iron King(Iron Fey, #1)
Author: Julie Kagawa Paperback: 363pgs.
Publisher: February 1st 2010 by Harlequin Teen
Source: Bought from The Book Depository
Author Website/Book Website/Amazon

Summary:Meghan Chase has never fit in at her small-town high school, and now, on the eve of her 16th birthday, she discovers why. When her half brother is kidnapped, Meghan is drawn into a fantastical world she never imagined--the world of Faery, where anything you see may try to eat you, and Meghan is the daughter of the summer faery king. Now she will journey into the depths of Faery to face an unknown enemy . . . and beg the help of a winter prince who might as soon kill her as let her touch his icy heart. The Iron King is the first book in the Iron Fey series.

My Thoughts: I loved this book. I think I was anticipating meeting Puck and Ash because of the whole Team thing so at times I got a little distracting. Oh, I have to mention I'm team Ash :).
The characters in this story were fantastic. Meaghan was a strong and great person, always wanting to help others even though she might get hurt in the process. Though I think she is a little too trusting :). Puck was one of those characters I like. He was funny but he knew when it got serious. Ash was great. His personality is the kind that I love. The silent type who doesn't want people to know what's really inside. I have a problem for falling for those types of guys. The type that ignore the girl and won't talk to her but at the first look or admittance of love he has me and I love him once again. Through out the story you are left thinking what is going on between Puck and Ash and when you find out everything makes sense even though it doesn't make anything better.. The chemistry and pull between the characters was so...gripping, for lack of a better word.
This book had great character, great story/plot, originality, it was funny, it was sweet and had it's aww moments, it had action and suspense, and overall it was a well written and fantastic book. I give it a high five out of five stars. Can't wait to read The Iron Daughter :)

Sing Me to Sleep by Angela Morrison Review

Sing Me to Sleep
Author: Angela Morrison
Hardback: 301pgs.
Publisher: March 4th 2010 by RazorBill
Source: Bought from The Book Depository

Summary:
THE TRANSFORMATION-Beth has always been “The Beast”—that’s what everyone at school calls her because of her awkward height, facial scars, and thick glasses. Beth’s only friend is geeky, golden-haired Scott. That is, until she’s selected to be her choir’s soprano soloist, and receives the makeover that will change her life forever.

THE LOVE AFFAIR-When Beth’s choir travels to Switzerland, she meets Derek: pale, brooding, totally dreamy. Derek’s untethered passion—for music, and for Beth—leaves her breathless. Because in Derek’s eyes? She’s not The Beast, she’s The Beauty.

THE IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE-When Beth comes home, Scott, her best friend in the world, makes a confession that leaves her completely torn. Should she stand by sweet, steady Scott or follow the dangerous, intense new feelings she has for Derek?

THE HEARTBREAK-The closer Beth gets to Derek, the further away he seems. Then Beth discovers that Derek’s been hiding a dark secret from her …one that could shatter everything.

Review: The relationship between Beth and Derek was one with many hard times and struggles, while still having a great chemistry and passion and love that keeps them together. The relationship at times was questioned by those around them and those they themselves questioning if they are meant to be, like many. At times, Beth kept questioning the relationship, and really I didn't blame her but at the same time I think it was mainly because she wasn't 100% sure of herself. She still saw herself as the beast.
I read many reviews of this book, and many of them questioned the extent that the characters went to to have Beth be "beautiful". Though I do think thy did do a lot, I don't think it was the most drastic thing to do. Many pointed out that this could show girls that to be beautiful and feel good about themselves they had to do these things, but I don't think so. I think this book actually does the opposite. Throughout the book Beth still sees herself as the best and keeps thinking "Why does he love me?" or "He's probably with her, why wouldn't he be ?". It shows more that even all those procedures won't make you feel better, they won't make you better, they won't make you beautiful only you yourself can make yourself beautiful. A couple procedures won't make someone fall in love with you.
I loved all the characters. Each one had their moments when they made me angry and I wanted to yell at them, but that would have gotten me some weird stares. I really liked Beth, the moment she made me angry was when she couldn't seem to see how great of a person she was, how beautiful she was, and how just because Derek doesn't call back it doesn't automatically mean that he's back with his ex. I loved Derek and he only had a couple moments when he made me freak out. i.e. Kitchen Scene after Pasta. Scott seemed to receive a lot of love in the reviews I read, but I just couldn't seem to find a place in my heart for him. I liked him but I didn't love him either.
To wrap this up. I loved the premise, I loved the characters, I loved how it played out, I love Angela Morrison's writing, and can not wait to read more from her, I really enjoyed this book, but there is one point that I didn't like. Near the end and at some points I felt like Beth needed to feel more than she did. I felt like it was to fast near the end. I expected and I was fine with most of it when I was thinking about it but I felt like it was too fast and she didn't feel enough. I have been anticipating it for a while and went in reading it with fear of not liking it from some of the reviews, but I really really enjoyed it and I give it a low 5 Stars, because the last page confused me and made me angry, like I talked about before but the rest of the book made up for it. urgh, that last page. If you've read this already please explain to me because it kind of broke my heart a little.

The Unwritten Rule Review

The Unwritten Rule
Author: Elizabeth Scott
Hardback: 224pgs.
Publisher: March 16th 2010 by Simon Pulse
Source: Won from Contest at Readergrlz

Summary:
Everyone knows the unwritten rule: You don't like your best friend's boyfriend.

Sarah has had a crush on Ryan for years. He's easy to talk to, supersmart, and totally gets her. Lately it even seems like he's paying extra attention to her. Everything would be perfect except for two things: Ryan is Brianna's boyfriend, and Brianna is Sarah's best friend.

Sarah forces herself to avoid Ryan and tries to convince herself not to like him. She feels so guilty for wanting him, and the last thing she wants is to hurt her best friend. But when she's thrown together with Ryan one night, something happens. It's wonderful...and awful.

Sarah is torn apart by guilt, but what she feels is nothing short of addiction, and she can't stop herself from wanting more.

Review: Okay so let me tell you this book got me going' and goin' and goin'. Once I got into the book I could not get out of it. I had to go to the library the day I was planning to finish it, so I read it in the car so I wouldn't have to stop. Let me tell you this is not the best way to read a book, but I don't care. By the way I wasn't driving just in case any of you were wondering. :)
So I loved the characters, well mostly. Going into this book I thought I was going to like Sarah, but at the same time not like her for what she was doing. I mean come on right? Yeah I was wrong. Sarah is a great person who I can relate to a lot for the fact that I am a bit of a push over like she was at times but she really did care about the people around her that pushed her. Like any great character Sarah has flaws. To me her flaw was being to naive, I guess. She wasn't able to truly see the kind of girl Brianna was until the end. That leads me to Brianna. Elizabeth did such a great job with the character. She made me think Brianna was okay, then I sympathized for her, and then I wanted to yell at her, then I would sympathize with her again. This reminded me of Lena from The Luxe series. Then there is Ryan. He is such a great guy, but still realistic with the fears and reasons he had for doing what he did.
This book overall was great. This was a dramatic book and not what I was expecting to read when I first heard about it. I think this scenario is different than the ones I thought would be portrayed in this book, but I think it made it better since it wasn't as predictable. The only drawback for me was that I felt like Sarah need to yell at Brianna to make her understand, other than just allow Brianna to keep talking. I was sitting there frustrated that Sarah couldn't put Brianna in her place (w/out violence) and wanting to put her in her place myself but not being able to. This book got me really riled up at the end. I give this book 4.5 Stars and I totally recommend it. ( Look at me I used totally :) )

Tangled by Carolyn Mackler Review

Tangled
Author: Carolyn Mackler
Hardback: 320pgs.
Publisher: December 29th 2009 by HarperTeen
Source: Borrowed from MidColumbia Library
Summary:
Jena, Dakota, Skye, and Owen are all at Paradise—the resort in the Caribbean, that is—for different reasons, but in Paradise their lives become tangled together in ways none of them can predict. Over the course of four months, through four voices and four stories, what happened in Paradise will change them all.

In this extraordinary novel, the Printz Honor–winning author brings us her most accomplished work yet. Tangled is a story of the secrets we keep, the risks we take, and the things we do for love.

Review:Jena is a girl who doesn't have much of a life so she lives her life through the lives of others waiting for the day the perfect man/guy comes along. Dakota is a boy who's girlfriend died and he can't seem to get over the day of her death and can't stop being the jerk people make him to be. Skye is an actress who can't seem to ever be happy. She goes day after day smiling as if everything is okay when its not. Owen is guy who spends most of his time online than socializing with real people.
This was a great book. At the beginning I was kind of confused because for some odd reason I thought it was going to be four points of view on one event, but it's not. The book is split up into four section. Each one a different person. Each one a different month. I think this was a great job of writing a book. I always like to see the other person point of view and the way they think. The only downer to this is that once you read a section on a person you want it to keep going or find out the reason for something someone did but it switches off to the next month, the next person wondering what actually happened after that. Luckily it does answer those questions in the other sections, but you have to wait a little longer to find out and to me it didn't feel right.
The characters, for me, were really well written. Each one having their own flaws and each one having a good thing about them, whether it showed in their section or not, making them more real. I wish I would have gone on a little longer for Jena's section and Owen's section. Those two were my favorite out of the bunch. Especially Jena, she grew so much through the book.
So overall this was a great read but it wasn't the best for me because I felt that at times the sections where cut off a little short and it made me angry :). Ooh One more thing I wanted to say that is really random is that I thought it was really weird how Dakota kept saying "Tits". I haven't read that very often, I thought it was funny. Not the fact the they talked about that because I was fine when Owen thought "breasts" but "tits" seams weird to me, but it made Dakota, Dakota. hmm. I give Tangled 4.5 Stars or an A-.

4.5 Stars OR A-

Fairy Tale

Sypnosis:"Morgan Sparks and Cam Browne are a match made in heaven. They've been best friends since birth, they tell each other everything, and oh yeah- they're totally hot for each other.

Witty, original and unexpectedly touching, FAIRY TALE will captivate fans of TWILIGHT and WICKED LOVELY.
"

Review:The first thing that made me want to read this story was the cover. I mean, is it not beautiful? When I got his book I kept putting it off because it is so small. I really enjoyed this book.
I think the whole concept of having this stranger come and find out that you boyfriend was a fairy and is going to have to leave and be a fairy king is very, well, interesting.
For me it was really easy to like the characters. I thought Cam and Morgan where the cutest couple ever. The whole 1-2-3 thing is adorable:). One of things that I thought was real original is that as time went on Cam started to shrink and become more fairy like. I had never read that before.
My favorite character honestly is Pip. Ah Pip. He is so sincere and completely nice and so willing to help and give himself up for true love. I love him so much. My favorite part in the book is when they’re clipping stories and Pip has a kind of spasm attack from reading a joke about fish hitting a wall and saying “Dam”.
I really felt myself going through the roller coaster that Morgan was going through. Pip or Cam? Unlike Morgan though I didn’t make excuses for the feelings towards Pip, which is one of the things that made me angry. She couldn’t accept that maybe by chance Cam wasn’t the one.
In conclusion this is a very cute quick read that I absolutely loved. The characters are likeable and the author does a great job with the writing. If you’re looking for a real adventure book this is not the one for you though. I give it a four.point.eight because the ending wasn’t the best. I think the outcome is good but it felt like it needed more.

Review: My Soul To Save

My Soul To Save
Author: Rachel Vincent
Paperback: 279 pages
Publisher: Harlequin Teen , December 29th, 2009
Source: Borrowed from Library

Sypnosis:“If she were going to die, I’d already be screaming. I’m a banshee. That’s what we do.”

The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad’s ironclad curfew and putting her boyfriend’s loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls for a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld — a consequence they can’t possibly understand. Kaylee can’t let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk....

Review: I was really looking forward to reading this book.I love the whole premise of the books and I really really loved the first one, but this one was just...ehh.

For me if I enjoy a book I will occasionally take breaks from reading, if I love a book I love a book I won't stop reading unless its necessary, if I am not enjoying myself with a book I find myself making reasons to stop reading. This book never really hooked me enough to the point of no wanting to stop. I kept waiting for it to happen and when it kind of happened it didn't last long. I didn't love the characters as much this time around, I do love Kaylee, Nash, and Todd but not as much. They all seemed...ehh just like the book. The romance in this book wasn't great either. The closest they got to anything like that is when every they where making out hardcore and would be interrupted by Tod. I loved Tod for that.

Something else that probably threw me off is the whole Dekker Media which I think was referring to Disney. I don't know. Whitney Lance (Brittney Spears) and Something Cohan. I think that threw me off a bit.

Overall, I had really high expectations for this book and maybe it's unfair but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first. I will still read the third in the series when it comes out and I'm excited :). I don't like saying a book is bad because I know that the authors worked really hard but I just didn't enjoy it very much. I give it two.point.five stars. It's hurting me to be honest. I know that a lot of people did enjoy this book.

Penelope and Ouran Review

Posted by: Karla in

Okay so, I didn't want this blog to be just about books so today I'm going to review to different thing. The first being a movie and the second being an anime. These reviews will be short and sweet :) like all my reviews will be. I am not much of a critical person. I either like it or I don’t.

Movie Review: Penelope

Penelope

Plot Summary: “In this modern day romantic tale, Penelope is about a young girl's inspiring journey, a mysterious family secret and the power of love. With all odds against her, in order for Penelope to break the family curse, she must find true love with "one of her own kind"”

Okay so this movie isn't new or anything but I ended up watching it today. I had wanted to see it since it came out in 2006 but I had never gotten the chance.

This movie was great. It was funny and emotional and fantastic. To me it had to do with the fact that id you accept yourself everything else just comes to you or something like that I’m not very good with expressing myself in these kinds of situation.

I laughed, I cried ( but I cry a lot in movies…and books…and manga…and anime…yeah I cry a lot :) ), and I would absolutely recommend this movie.

Show Review: Ouran High School Host Club

Plot Summary: “Haruhi is a poor tomboyish student at a school for the ultra-wealthy, able to attend because of a scholarship, and unable to even afford a uniform. One day, she stumbles across the decidedly peculiar but very popular Ouran Host Club. She tries to leave, but accidentally breaks a vase, and unable to pay for it, she's told that she'll have to stay and do odd jobs. That is, until they decide she would be more valuable as a club member. Not realizing she's female due to her appearance, they fix her up and give her a male uniform. She's an instant hit, so they decide to have her keep up the charade even after they find out the truth. Haruhi, being average almost to a fault, doesn't know what to make of the unconventional activities of the Host Club (or of the even more unconventional members), but having little choice, she plays along. Before long, real bonds are formed, friends made, and Haruhi finds herself accepted in a way she could never have been otherwise in this affluent school.”

Review: If you like anime and you loved Fruits Basket you will absolutely love this show. This show is humorous and it still has deep message. Each character has their own problems and when they come together in the host club they all gain experience and learn and find how to be a better people. Its kind of like they are each others saviors kind of but not as dramatic. I loved this series for its funny/tender moments. You fall in love with all the characters.

Push by Sapphire Review

Posted by: Karla in

PushPush by Sapphire

Borrowed from Library

Summary:An electrifying first novel that shocks by its language, its circumstances, and its brutal honesty, Push recounts a young black street-girl's horrendous and redemptive journey through a Harlem inferno. For Precious Jones, 16 and pregnant with her father's child, miraculous hope appears and the world begins to open up for her when a courageous, determined teacher bullies, cajoles, and inspires her to learn to read, to define her own feelings and set them down in a diary.

My Thoughts: Okay so the only reason I wanted to read this book was because the movie looked amazing and I don't like to watch book-based movies without reading the books.(reason I read Twilight)To start of this book was so hard to read. There were points in this book where I just wanted to put this book down and scrub away what I just read from my memory, but I didn't. I kept reminding my self that people go through this and that its best to learn all the horrible things in this world and not deny all the horrible things that have happened, will happen and are haping at this very moment.

Precious' journey is such a harsh and horrific thing. From the movie I knew that the father had gotten her pregnant, but I learned it was the SECOND time this had happened. I knew that the mom was horrible but she molested her to and I just...I just... I couldn't understand how they could put a child through such hell. Later on in the story the mom tells what happened the first time the abuse started. While she was telling the story, Precious kept wanting her to stop , I wanted her to stop and shut up. How can someone be so disgusting and have no heart, no soul to see what was happening to the child and not care if her man got angry. Kick him to the damn curb. What these people did was just... disgusting, horrific, and all other words that I can't think of.

I think it was a fantastic that Sapphire wrote the story as a journal. I think it helped make the whole story and life so much more real. The dialect, the spelling errors, the language, and everything else helped make Precious' story much more real. I appreciated that the only subject talked about, for lack of a better word, was not just sexual and physical abuse, but other tough real like situations such as appearance, what that meant to some people, sexual preferences, and all the characters' stories, which were included in the book also.

Something that I didn't like at all, but I knew were a main element of having Precious tell the story, is the amount of foul language. There was sooo much bad words in this book and the use of p***y was too much for me.

Overall this book was a good read. I wouldn't recommend it to kids under 15 or 16. I'm kind of used to reading about these subject, I read a lot of Ellen Hopkins but the stories never seem to stop horrify me and make me want to, as I mentioned before, put the book down and erase it from my memory but i know its real and someone has actually gone through it or something close to it. It contains very harsh and horrific subjects and a lot of unsuitable language. So if you want a gripping and eye opening read and don't really mind a lot and I mean A LOT of foul language then I would recommend it to you. For the fact that I really didn't completely love the book and I am not happy with so much foul language I give it a four.five.

****.5 Four.five Stars
